Timeless by Brian Coyle
What is it?
Timeless is a one man show about Martin, a man who can no longer create new memories.
What's it all about?
Everyday starts the same for Martin, he wakes up thinking he has a dentist's appointment, and that it is 2008. The reality is, though that Martin has a disease. A disease in which he cannot make any new memories, and has been living the same day for ten years.
Throughout the show we experience a day in the life of Martin, and through this we hear stories from his past, examine his relationships, in particular his marriage, and the toll that his condition has taken on his family.
Throughout the story, Martin comes to his own realizations, and puts together the pieces of his past to create a sort of present that we never really know is real or just a fabrication of memory.
How did it make me feel?
A show inspired by true events, the way John Rayment portrays Martin is nothing short of warm and comforting. It is obvious that he is an accomplished actor and the nuances that come through really give you a feeling of riding in a cab and having some light banter.
The story is really heartbreaking at times, and I found myself really feeling that gut punch every time Martin began to tell the audience he is off to the dentist. It made me really grateful to have all my own memories and how important remembering all the small things is.
Where Was It Playing?
The show is playing at Theatre N16, which is a perfect black box space for this wistful show.
This is the kind of theatre that will lead you down a path and break your heart without question. It really is a wonderful exploration of the human mind and what it means to hold your memories close to you.
This show is being performed at Theate N16 from the 1st to the 4th of October 2018.
