The Cat's The Thing at theSpace @ Surgeons Hall, Haldane Theatre
What Is It?
Marissa Landy explores the effects of OCD in women through this gentle story of a Tanya and her "cat" Dale.
What Is It All About?
Tanya has everything she needs to survive. Food, a large range of clothing, mindful exercises to keep her balanced and her cat Dale to keep her company.
But as she goes about her day, counting down to a big event on her calendar, everything she has starts to wane on her, and as the pressure builds so too do the voices in her head. Dale the cat provides little support, and as Tanya tries to her best to manage her mental state, and as we witness flashbacks from a younger version of her life, we understand that this condition has been weighing on her for a very long time.
How Did It Make Me Feel?
It took me a little while to understand what was going on in this show, and the first twenty minutes or so felt isolated and like it was its own stand alone piece. But as the show progressed, the show reveals the missing links and we come to understand the trauma that Tanya is dealing with. It is a very exciting form of storytelling that really pays off.
Landy's performance is warm and endearing, and seeing her attempts to stay connected with her cat dale, makes the moment that the penny drops on Tanya's mental state and struggles even more powerful.
A clever and inventive story of mental illness that comes together in an understated and intelligent manner.
The Cat's The Thing is playing at theSpace @ Surgeon's Hall, Haldane Theatre, until the 24th August 2019.
