Simon Caine: Every Room Becomes a Panic Room When You Overthink Enough
What is it?
Simon Caine’s touring stand-up show, Every Room Becomes a Panic Room When You Overthink Enough, has come to Vault Festival 2020 after a successful run across the UK in 2019.
What is it about?
Caine talks about everything from his insecurities to his experiences with therapy, his love-life (what there is and isn’t of it) and his somewhat unconventional experience with a Ghostbusters-themed wedding cake.
How did it make me feel?
Descending the stairs to the Cockatiel Club at Hello Darling just down the road from Waterloo station felt a lot like rush hour on the tube crossed with walking into an abnormally small hammam. Caine’s audience packed into the intimate basement space armed with drinks from the bar and took in the unconventional décor including what seemed to be a shrine to a cartoon tiger and a giant clock that took up the back wall.
Caine tries to transcend the intimate gig space but, with an audience of only about twenty, audience participation feels a lot more like getting called on in a university seminar than your average stand-up gig. The audience is quickly up close and personal with Caine’s jokes about his lack of love-life and crushing on his therapist.
I was surprised that the show didn’t swoop into the panic room concept more or discuss the tour’s name. While Caine’s somewhat goofy relatability is certainly entertaining, the show feels a little thematically disjointed.
Caine tries to steer clear of political commentary but then goes on to discuss the difficulty of having ones jokes plucked out of context and drops a couple of rather clunky jokes about the gender pay gap and the tampon tax which has the audience laughing a little awkwardly.
Where is it playing?
Every Room Becomes a Panic Room When You Overthink Enough is playing at the Cockatiel Club at Hello Darling a short walk from Waterloo station until the 30th January. Caine then tours to Australia and New Zealand in February and March and will be back in London at Barking Mad Comedy with Sindhu Vee in April.
Much like a Ghostbusters-themed wedding cake, Caine is a bit muddled and unconventional but he’ll definitely make you laugh.
