Sherlock Holmes in A Scandal in Bohemia! presented by Struts and Frets Theatre Company
Updated: Oct 31, 2019
What is it?
An all women show about one very special Sherlock Holmes’s case.
What is it all about?
We find ourselves once again in the iconic 221b Baker Street to witness how the one and only Sherlock Holmes tries to resolve yet another intriguing case. This time a mysterious character, Count Vann Kramm, comes to Baker Street in need of Sherlock’s services to prevent one unfortunate indiscretion with Irene Adler to see the light. The Count, now engaged to Clotilde Lothman von Saxe-Meiningen, a young Scandinavian princess, is being threatened with sensitive material, a delicate photograph, which will immediately terminate the engagement.
How did it make me feel?
When it comes to classics such as Sherlock Holmes I feel it’s always tricky because you never know what to expect. I must say I was really excited to see an all female production about the famous detective. In that sense it didn’t deceive me. There is amazing character work going on by most of the actors that gives the overall performance a unique essence. Setting it in a darker and more obscure atmosphere than we are used to seeing Sherlock in these days is an excellent way to show the audience another side of the character. And to support this the rest of the cast does a wonderful job. That being said I must admit that sometimes it felt like the actors were too comfortable on stage meaning that the stakes weren’t high enough. We all know that Sherlock is going to solve the case but what we don’t know is how and that is when the actors’ should have left the audience wondering what was going to happen next.
Where is it playing?
Sherlock Holmes will run at the Tristan Bates Theatre until November 2th, it is at 19:45 (14:30)
Overall it was a lovely evening at the theatre, thanks to the extra mile that the company went to. Gin cocktails and pork pies courtesy of Mrs. H, audience participation guessing by Mr Holmes, a lovely puppet moment about womanhood and an endearing display of theatrical tricks that reminded me how magical going to the theatre can be.
Sherlock Holmes in A Scandal in Bohemia! is playing at the Tristan Bates Theatre until the 2nd November 2019.
